The Corso Bathroom Trends
The Corso Residence: When the bathroom is an integrated part of the architecture of the house it transcends mere interior styling. This upstairs master ensuite built 20 years ago is all about its connection to the outside – the terrace, the greenery, the view. 20 years in use, and all we’d change is perhaps the tapware!

With over 40 years’ experience in designing residential and commercial properties HHH Architects’ top priority is to create spaces for long-term pleasure and stylish functionality.

When it comes to designing kitchens and bathrooms, we find clients are often well equipped with ideas and a vision of what they want, drawing inspiration from the latest trends featuring on the internet, Pinterest, magazines and TV shows such as The Block.

Bathrooms are classified as investment spaces and can make or break the saleability of your home. When designed and built well, these rooms stand out and create an emotional response to potential buyers. However, trends come and go so it’s important you include ones that you love and will stand the test of time.

Let’s look at some of the bathroom trends unfolding for 2018.

‘Escapism’ is high on the list

  • People are bringing the day spa feel into their homes, creating a peaceful oasis to relax and escape from the busyness of life, using earthy neutral colours and materials as well as natural lighting including skylights and floor to ceiling windows to blend with the outdoors.

Colour Palettes

  • Neutral or earthy tones
  • Soft warm or cool greys
  • Shades of blue mixed with white, with navy making a striking comeback, especially in conjunction with Coastal or Hamptons style renovations and new builds

Benchtops

  • Quartz
  • Thin Profile to create streamline aesthetic

Tapware & Vanities

  • Matt finish graphite or black for sleek sophistication
  • For a softer look – gold, champagne or bronze metallic
  • For a dash of luxury, make a pair of striking vanity basins the focus point in your ensuite

Baths

  • Stand-alone baths remain right on trend this year
  • Introduction of feature coloured baths such as black and navy
  • Setting the bath tub within an oversized shower enclosure for that luxurious wet-room look and feel

Showers

  • Multiple shower heads and wall jets providing a day spa ambience
  • Enclosed showers can be combined with steam, light and aroma therapy at surprisingly reasonable cost

Tiles

  • Big is beautiful! Large format tiles free of grout lines provide a clean minimalistic finish. Just make sure it goes with the space. Oversized doesn’t work for very small bathrooms
  • Marble and neutral stone tiles
  • Mosaic tiles continue to be on trend for floors, walls or as a standout feature – including simple shapes, bold colour designs and marble geometric patterns for more of a traditional touch
  • Monochrome – black and white continues to be on-trend for clean classic cool lines

Simplicity and materiality are key in high-rise apartment designs. The finishes and colours must stand the test of time as renovations in high-rises can be costly as well as difficult logistically. See below examples of contemporary shower room ensuite design.
